Akcja serialu rozgrywa się w XII-wiecznej Anglii, a bohaterów poznajemy w momencie, gdy tron przejmuje jeden z członków rodziny króla Henryka II. Widzowie będą świadkami walki o władzę między córką Henryka i jego siostrzeńcem. Głównym bohaterem jest jednak biskup Waleran Bogod (w tej roli będzie można zobaczyć Iana McShane'a - ''Deadwood'', ''Kings'').
W drugoplanowej roli pojawi się Donald Sutherland, a oprócz niego wystąpią m.in. Rufus Sewell i Matthew Macfayen.
